Resilience Through Remembering

When life feels heavy, I often return to my dad’s words: “Life is a series of peaks and valleys.” I didn’t realize then how deeply I’d need those words, or how they’d become a lifeline through loss, change, and the unseen strength it takes to begin again.

Sometimes, the echo of a few wise words can carry us through the hardest times. Phrases passed down through generations remind us that those who came before us weathered their own storms and found a way through. Remembering the people who’ve helped us carry on strengthens our sense of connection and courage.

Throughout my life, but especially during the difficult seasons, my dad’s voice has been there, steady and grounding. Whenever I felt overwhelmed or lost in uncertainty, he’d remind me, “Life is a series of peaks and valleys.”

Those words hold so much wisdom. Peaks and valleys. The understanding that life won’t always be rosy; that hard times are not only inevitable but part of the rhythm of being human. It’s an acceptance of how life flows: sometimes we’re climbing, sometimes just coasting, and sometimes we’re simply doing our best to keep trudging forward. But even in the lowest valleys, there’s hope—a quiet knowing that the climb back up will come.

Remembering my dad’s words helps me stay grounded and offers peace, especially now as I face his illness and the gradual loss of the man who has always been my rock. He’s the one I’ve always turned to when I’m unsure: to talk through decisions, to weigh the pros and cons, to remind me to keep going when I felt like giving up. No matter how many times I came to him fearful, frustrated, or at wit’s end, he listened. Sometimes he’d help me find my way forward and other times, he’d open his arms and envelop me in his one-of-a-kind comforting dad hugs.

These memories and his words now serve as emotional scaffolding whenever I face a challenge. His example of perseverance, his calm reasoning, and his unwavering belief in me continue to give me quiet strength in the present. Remembering, I’ve realized, is not just nostalgia; it’s resilience. It’s the interweaving of memory and gratitude, braided together to remind us that we’ve been carried through before, and we will be again.

Peaks and valleys. Even now, Dad’s words still steady me, bringing me reassurance that no matter how deep the valley feels, I can bet on the fact that brighter days will always follow.
Each of us carries quiet teachers of resilience in our memories. Who taught you to keep going, showing you strength, kindness, or faith when you needed it most? Honoring them for this is a form of gratitude. You might try:

  • Revisiting an old photo and reflecting on what that moment taught you.
  • Recalling wise words that still comfort you.
  • Creating a “resilience list” of people who’ve helped you through challenges.
  • Reaching out to someone still here and thanking them for their comforting presence.

Every memory we keep close becomes a thread of strength we can hold onto when life begins to unravel. In remembering, we find resilience.
