I have a practice of rereading my journal entries from past years—sometimes all the way back to 2017. It’s a rhythm that helps me see what God’s been doing in my life over time. Some things have changed. Others? Still in progress.
Recently, I came across an entry from August 29, 2023, where I was talking with God about belief and unbelief. I had been reflecting on that familiar verse from Mark 9:24: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
I remember writing that just when I think my belief is strong—just when I think I’ve “conquered” an area—another strain of unbelief shows up. A more subtle variant. It reminded me of a certain virus we all came to know too well… the kind that mutates into weaker forms, still persistent, still disruptive.
And that’s what this felt like. Unbelief with a new face. Not loud and obvious, but quieter. Sneakier.
In the middle of that reflection, I sensed the Lord speak gently to my heart:
“I’m purging the soul to make more room for the spirit.”
To which I replied (with full sass),
“How much more purging are we going to be doing?!”
And in the quiet, I heard this:
“I will be faithful to complete it.”
That line, of course, echoes the promise in Philippians 1:6:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Still, I couldn’t help myself—my next response was:
“Like right now would be nice!”
And I kid you not, I heard God laugh. Not in mockery, but with the joy and intimacy of a Father who knows me. Who delights in my honesty. Who doesn’t flinch at my frustration, but meets me in it.
That’s what I want to leave you with today:
God is still completing the work.
Even when it feels slow.
Even when new “variants” show up.
Even when you’re tired of being purged.
He hasn’t stopped. And He hasn’t forgotten how to laugh with you in the middle of it.
